Summary: Danny doesn't like being kept in the dark
Frank cleared his throat. Erin, Linda, and the kids had been having an awkward conversation, but you could still cut the tension in the room with a knife. His sons were fighting again, but this time, they were silently fuming from across the table. “Shall we dispense with the five hundred pound elephant in the room?”
Everyone froze where they were and looked at him. They had all sensed it, but no one wanted to upset the tenuous ceasefire. Danny was the first to make a move, tossing his napkin down on the table. “I don't like being kept in the dark.” Danny glared at Jamie across the table, making the younger man squirm.
“I don't know what you're talking about,” Jaime muttered, taking a defensive stance, arms crossed over his chest.
“Like Hell you don't! Erin has a problem, she comes to me. We deal with it. But you? I gotta hear from Renzulli that you're off your game, that you're distracted and making mistakes.” Danny was cut off by his father.
“What kind of 'mistakes' are we talking about here? I should have been made aware if he's having trouble on the job.” Frank looked intensely at his youngest, knowing that even a slight distraction could cost a cop his life, and he'd already lost one son too many.
Jamie looked down at his plate as if considering bolting from the room. Both of the older men now had their eyes on him, and his grandpa was now watching the situation with some interest. He tried to collect his thoughts, figure out what he could say before Danny started going off again.
“Huh, Jamie? You got anything to say for yourself? Renzulli says that you were fine on the last case you actually worked, figured out that girl was in trouble even before he did. Then, he leaves you at the gym and you start acting like this?” Danny was demanding, but not yelling. He noticed Jamie shut down, clamping his jaw shut in a way he only did when trapped. Lowering his voice, he tried a different angle. “I can't help you, kid, unless you tell me what we're up against.”
“It doesn't matter. I'll get my act together.” Jamie tried backing out. He couldn't let them know what Malevsky said to him. It would only cause more problems.
“I don't really care at this point if you get your act together. I wanna know what has you in knots like this.” Danny was still talking to him with a gentle voice and it only steeled Jamie's resolve that he couldn't worry him. He started to say that it didn't matter again, when Danny said, “You know what? Keep your secrets. I'll just ask around the precinct, see who does want to talk to me.”
Jamie closed his eyes briefly before clearing his throat, and looking meaningfully at Danny's boys. “Sonny Malevsky. He was talking about you and Joe being good detectives. He mentioned working with Joe and another female officer that recently died from their unit.” He was talking so quiet that Danny had to lean forward to hear him. Linda ushered the kids out of the room, knowing that if Jamie was getting this worked up, it was something that they maybe shouldn't hear.
“Then he said, 'I bet with your brother killed in the line of duty, your family worries about you.' He told me to be careful and that it can be dangerous out there. It could mean anything, but the way he said it was off, you know.” Jamie was examining his hands like they were something foreign to him, trying to reel in his emotions and not show Danny just how worried he really was. Danny was fuming, clenching his jaw, and trying to see passed the red haze that had covered his eyes, while Erin looked at all three men in their family, and Frank had his hand poised an inch away from Jamie's arm, fighting the urge to physically comfort his son. No one threatened a Reagan and got away with it.
