Summary: The last thing he knew, he had been driving on one of the back roads, bringing Tyler home.
The world spun around him, making him feel nauseous and he wondered what happened. The last thing he knew, he had been driving on one of the back roads, bringing Tyler home. Flashes of a deer in the road, swerving to avoid it, and then going down an incline and running into the tree filled in the blanks for him. He tried to move his head and was met with a sharp pain and more dizziness.
“Tyler?” His plea sounded weak and hoarse, and he closed his eyes to shut out some of the light that was in front of him and behind him. There was no answer. He laid his head back on the seat again, trying to find more clarity, get rid of some of the pain. It took a lot of effort mixed with a crunchy pain when he turned his head to the right, where Tyler had been, only to find the seat empty and the door opened. Against his will, his eyes closed again and he fell back into the darkness.
“Jeremy!” Elena hadn't been in the car with him. He would have remembered her being with them, and she definitely would have had something to say about them holding hands, about their conversation.
“Elena?” He whimpered, trying to move again. There were hands on both of his shoulders now, holding him back against his seat.
“Shh! Jeremy, we need you to stay still and wait for the ambulance to get here, okay?” Stefan was talking to him now. He felt panic rise up again and fought the hands that were holding him.
“Elena!” He yelled, certain now that she was there with him. How many people had been in the car with him? He could only remember it being him and Tyler, but if Elena was there, other people might have been, too. Had anyone been injured?
“Relax, baby. We were in an accident. Your car hit a tree near the front driver-side bumper. I got out and Elena happened to be driving by with Stefan and Damon. You're going to be all right. We just have to wait for the ambulance to come, and it's important that you don't move.” Tyler explained to him, getting close to his ear and applying more pressure to his shoulder to keep him in place.
“What happened?”
“I just told you,” Tyler sounded worried now, and Jeremy could see him looking anxiously up towards the road.
“No, to me,” He clarified. He needed to know why Tyler and Stefan were holding him down and why he could hear Elena crying in the background. It had to be serious.
“Jeremy, just stay still and wait for the ambulance. The less you know right now, the better off you are,” Stefan reasoned in the soft, gentle voice he used when he was treating him like a child.
“I need to know!” Elena was sobbing louder, and he realized that she was on her cell phone with someone, giving them information, and he lay still to listen.
“I don't know. His head hit the steering wheel really hard. He's awake now and asking questions, but he was unconscious for a long time and his head's bleeding really bad. He has blood on his lips and most of his face is bruised, but I don't think he's bleeding from anywhere else. I don't know. He sounds really weak and I think his legs are trapped under the steering wheel. The airbags didn't work.”
Jeremy tried to sit forward out of instinct. That couldn't be him she was describing. He was a little dizzy and nauseous, but he was fine. “Jeremy, sit still. It's all right.”
The next thing he heard was Damon trying to usher Elena away from the car. They must have figured out he could hear them. Her voice got quieter and he could tell she was walking away. He finally let himself take in the scene before him, even if it was through double vision. The windshield was smashed, a tree limb resting on the passenger side dash board. The lights were still on, the engine was smoking a little, and there were shards of glass everywhere. It looked like a scene out of a horror movie and he started letting himself drift off again, thinking about how this was the part where the vampires attacked the idiot that was too stupid to get out of the car. He was almost lulled back to sleep by the dull pounding in his head when he felt a hand on his chin.
“Jeremy?” The voice was tinny and far away now, like it was said through a tunnel, and he blinked his eyes open. “Jeremy? Are you still with us?”
He tried to clear his throat, to get more air, and said, “Elena?” It hadn't been what he wanted to say and he wanted to answer the man's question, but his sister had to be somewhere. She was always there when he was sick or hurt.
“Elena's here. Jeremy, do you know where you are?” Stefan, his mind supplied. It was Stefan Salvatore that was right in front of his face.
“Accident. What happened to Tyler?” Jeremy asked, trying to sit forward again.
“I'm right here, man.” Tyler's face appeared before him, and Jeremy realized that he was still pushing down on his shoulder.
“Tyler, he's getting worse. I need you to go get Elena. Find out how far away that ambulance is.” Stefan wasn't looking at him anymore, instead speaking directly to his boyfriend, slowly, like he did to try to gain dominance over Jeremy. The pressure was off of his right shoulder, and he tried to lean to the left, into the steady and secure pressure that was Stefan's body. He was pushed back up, held in place again.
“It's all right, Jeremy. You can't move right now.” Hands were holding onto his right shoulder again, and this time, instinct told him that he should lean into the touch.
“Jeremy, no! You have to stay still. The ambulance is almost here. You need to stay with me. I can't lose you, too.” Elena's voice still held that desperate tone to it, but he could tell that she was trying to control herself. He felt a slight kiss to his forehead and she was leaning against his shoulder now, offering him warmth. He closed his eyes again, and let himself relax into her touch.
He was moving. It was cold and he was moving, with something solid against his back and he was aware of hands all around him. He knew it would hurt, but he tried opening his eyes. The trees were moving above him at an angle, and he was definitely out of the car. Forcing himself to focus on the people that surrounded him, he saw Elena, Tyler, Stefan, Damon, Sherrif Forbes, and a man and woman that he didn't know. “What's happening?” His throat was scratchy and came out in a rasp, but he needed to know why Elena was outright crying now.
“It's okay, Jeremy. Help is here. Just stay with us.” Elena tried unsuccessfully to hide the quiver in his voice, and he reached out for her. She almost moved her hand, but told him gently, “Jeremy, we're trying to get you back to the road. You're on a backboard and we're carrying you out.”
“Okay,” He rasped, his eyes rolling back in his head. There were more lights when he opened his eyes again, bright and flashing this time, and loud noises. He tried to shy away from all of it and was met with a hand over his forehead again. Vervaine and Sage filled his senses and the lights were dulled a bit in shadow. She looked like an angel with the light outlining her face, and her mouth was moving, but he couldn't make out the words. The stretcher was moving again, this time being turned around and he had to swallow the bile in his throat to keep from vomiting.
“I'm right here, Jeremy. Tyler's going to ride to the hospital with Stefan and Damon, but I'm going to stay right here with you,”Elena reassured him and he was relieved to be able to hear her voice clearly again. With her right by his side, he knew that he would be okay.
