Supernatural Epiosde 4.1 Review
Sep. 19th, 2008 01:12 amI love that they used “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC for the opening song. It was so fitting and really set the mood for the episode.
I think it’s good that Dean didn’t just “forget” what happened in Hell. It’ll make him that much better of a hunter.
*shivers* He woke up to a nightmare. That one of the biggest fears-- being buried alive.
Did that first scene, where Dean was digging up from the grave remind anyone else of Pet Cemetery? I mean, it was the dead digging up from his grave and that circle of land.
I like the red of this year’s title. It’s a really good color.
Jared has top billing in the credits, and there’s no Katie. That’s so awesome.
Dean still likes his porn. He went through Hell, literally, and he still loves his porn and his food. *hugs him for being so simple* I love Dean.
Dean hotwires a car and it’s still a classic. *snorts* He couldn’t have hotwired a newer or more beat up car. Nope, Dean always has to have the classics—not that I can blame him for that.
Bobby turned angry and started drinking because Dean died. I love that they’re showing him as being that much family, that Dean’s death had that much of an effect on him.
I love that Dean said that Bobby was the closest thing that he has to a father. As much as I love John, I could see how Bobby would be more of the kind of father that would actually be there.
It really says something to the kind of man that Sam’s becoming that he wouldn’t let Bobby make sure that he was okay and didn’t let him keep tabs on him to make sure that he was even still alive. Again, as much as I love John, I really don’t want to see Sam turn into that kind of a man.
I love that Dean was searching for Sammy, and that he said that he knows everything about him. And, I love that Dean still calls Sammy a “kid.”
When Sammy and Dean first see each other in the hotel, after Bobby convinced Sam that it really was Dean, that was one of the best scenes of the whole series. There was so much desperation in that hug, even moreso than the last two hugs, because they both had that desperation and both missed their brother. The first hug, when Sam came back from the dead, was one sided for Dean, because Sam didn’t realize what Dean almost lost, and the second hug, when Sam got out of the tricksters world, was one sided because Dean didn’t realize what Sam had almost lost. This time, they both realized what was almost lost. And, it was so touching that Bobby was almost going to cry and that random girl (was that Ruby then) thought they were “together.”
Sam is in Pontiac, IL . Does that ring a bell with anyone? I’m from Illinois, and I don’t even know where that is. Oh, and once more, Kripke has the boys in Illinois. They seem to be there and the other Midwest states quite a bit.
I love Dean. He’s such an awesome big brother. I love that he saw how guilty Sam was, and said “It’s okay, Sammy. I don’t blame you.” I’ll bet Sammy’s needed to hear those words for the entire time that Dean was gone.
Sam was hunting down Lillith with only help from Ruby. That seems a bit reckless, and I don’t like that he’d rather trust a demon than other hunters. It makes me think that he may be going darkside.
Bobby realized that Sam’s becoming more like John, and called him on it. That’s so awesome, and I’m hoping it’ll be a wake-up call for Sam, because he’s always wanted to be anything but that.
I like that Dean remembers what happened to him in Hell, but he’ll never tell Sammy because he’s trying so hard to protect him.
I love that the Impala is like the fourth family member. Deangoing “Hey, sweetheart, did you miss me?” really made me smile. I love that as soon as Dean was back, Sam handed over the keys to him again.
Sam listens to country, and put an iPod jack in the car. For some reason, that amuses me so much. I always knew Sammy likes country music (and it is made of win), and I like that Sam modernized the car. It reminded me of in the Pilot when Sam was going through Dean’s cassette collection, and said “Well, for one, they’re cassettes” after saying that Dean needed to update. Looks like Sam updated for him.
Sam lied and told Dean that Ruby was dead. For some reason, that really bugs me. He trusted him with the information that she was around before, but now, he’s shutting Dean out and her in. I don’t like that. He also lied to Dean about working with his powers. We see in the scene at the diner that Sam’s not only been working with them, but he’s got them working pretty well for him. That’s worrying, because the only real reason to lie to Dean like that is if his powers were beginning to turn him evil.
Pam seems almost as cool as Ellen; it’s a shame we’re not going to see any more of her. It seems like the female characters that I like are all taken off and the ones I don’t end up coming back in some form. *coughs*In a brunette body*coughs*
I love Sam looking all upset when he saw he saw the handprint on Dean. That boy is just as fiercely protective of his brother as Dean is of him.
Sam’s being overly aggressive. It’s the little things, but this season, he seems much more aggressive than he was in the first.
*shakes head* Oh, Sammy, haven’t you learned? Nothing good happens when you sneak out on Dean? That has never ended well.
In this episode, Sam’s closer to the door. That’s really changed.
They’re both lying to each other. Sam’s lying about Ruby, his powers, and where he is and Dean’s lying about where he’s going and what he’s doing. They’re seriously out of sync with each other now.
I don’t like Ruby any better as a brunette, Kripke. I mean, I see the line of thinking, that it could have been Katie folks don’t like, but it wasn’t. I didn’t like the character. I could take or leave Katie, but I don’t like the character. And, this new actress didn’t seem to do all that good of a job. At least Katie’s lines didn’t fall flat.
Dean really doesn’t have any faith. It’s interesting that he believes in all the bad things, but an angel of the Lord, he doesn’t believe in. We’ve seen him having that kind of faith three times now (this episode, Faith, and Houses of the Holy). Well, I guess Mary was right: angels do watch over Dean when he sleeps. Which, kind of has me wondering, if Dean’s that good, that he’s actually seeing angels, than why isn’t Sammy, too? Maybe he is, though, because all we’ve heard is from demons (who could just be using him for bad) and John, who could have been wrong. Maybe Sammy’s powerful and either side could use him.
Dean doesn’t think he deserves to be saved. At least it’s a consistent theme.
I love that this is the second time that we’re hearing that Dean still has work to do.

Date: 2008-09-19 08:29 am (UTC)It was awesome, and a little overwhelming. The show is back! This episode was better than most of season three.

stil trips me out God choose Dean, moral lacking sexpot.

Date: 2008-09-19 11:57 am (UTC)It could be interesting. I like him better when he doesn't lie.
Read the Bible; there's plenty of folks that God chose that didn't start out as the best folks. Look at Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament. He killed Christians before he was converted.

Yeah, it totally reminded me of Pet Cemetery. It was a great scene! And I of course loved the reunion scene too, it was really emotional.

Date: 2008-09-19 11:56 am (UTC)Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I love classic horror, and that looked just like the Pet Cemetery to me.
That reunion scene was awesome. It'll be hard to top that in the next episode.

Your review is perfect! I agree with everything that you've said!
OMG!! Sam's powers!! But what about the Latin?? I'll miss it! LOL!
And I really hope that guy is an angel and Dean's new mission is from up above, but i don't know.

Thank you! *HUGS*
What about the Latin? He could still use Latin, you know, when he's trying for Dean not to know what he can do.
I'm hoping it is, too. And, I'm not seeing Kripke mess with that once he brought in angels.

Date: 2008-09-19 01:19 pm (UTC)While I don't like that the boys lied to each other and while it's obvious just how fiercely they love each other, it seems like the lying is only going to pull them apart which I'm not looking forward to. However, I LOVED seeing Sammy using his powers. I don't think he's going evil. Or at least, not intentionally. He trully believes that he's doing good, saving lives. I just think that the powers are turning him darkside, not evil, but darkside. And Dean really is the only one who can stop him.
Sam’s closer to the door. That’s really changed
I didn't even notice it. Wow, good catch

Date: 2008-09-20 07:27 am (UTC)That's what I was thinking. They got each other back, but with them both lying, their relationship is gonna fall apart.
I agree; I don't think he's becoming evil. He's just fighting fire with fire, and there's nothing really wrong with that.
There were picspams at [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] this last week, and they really made me think about that.

I loved that they used an angel, too. I like seeing the God stuff every once in a while.
Yeah, I'm not seeing it ending well. Right now, he's just fighting fire with fire, but that's not gonna end well. *huggles him, too*
*huggles you* Just for being awesome.

Date: 2008-09-19 03:20 pm (UTC)Just wanted to say I agree with Dean still likes his porn. He went through Hell, literally, and he still loves his porn and his food. *hugs him for being so simple* I love Dean.
And how Bobby calls Sam on becoming like his father... I've seen that transformation coming since John died. I like Bobby's no crap attitude :)
Overall I feel like I want more! Kripke - your mission has been accomplished for ep 1!

Date: 2008-09-20 07:32 am (UTC)It's the simple things that make Dean so awesome. And, that's definitely one of them.
Yeah, I've seen that coming, too. And, I've always loved how straight-forward Bobby is.
I know. I loved this episode more than any from season three, and I definitely want to know more. And, I want to see more of that angel.

Date: 2008-09-19 05:03 pm (UTC)Didn't Jared always have top billing?
In this episode, Sam’s closer to the door. That’s really changed.
Sam was very protective about Dean... His body language when Dean was talking to the demon in the diner, his reaction to seeing the hand print burn before the seance... It's interesting with his power, now, and this confidence it gives him against demons, how he knows he can stop the demons and he's worried about them coming to get Dean back so he's ready to kick anyone's ass that might try.

Date: 2008-09-20 07:37 am (UTC)I did notice those two things, too. He was being really overprotective.

Date: 2008-09-19 08:36 pm (UTC)darling this episode was amazing!!!!
best season premiere ever. (maybe together with "In my time of dying")
I really think that Ruby is brainwashing Sam... he thinks he is using his powers to help people, and maybe he is, but Ruby just wants him to practize with them but she has other plans for Sam!
And now maybe God sent his angel to rescue Dean because he wants him to stop Sam!! O_O
no subject
Date: 2008-09-20 12:59 pm (UTC)I totally agree; but then again, I've never liked Ruby.
And now maybe God sent his angel to rescue Dean because he wants him to stop Sam!! O_O
That would make so much sense. I could see that happening.

Date: 2008-09-20 11:28 am (UTC)And, he's wrong this time. He never thinks he's worth saving and he never has any faith.
Just... just let me have this until we're proven otherwise.
*hugs you*
I'm sorry. This came out a lot harsher than I meant it. I get what you mean; it's just that none of the MOTW have made me as giddy happy as this does, and I'm just really wanting it to be real, you know.

Date: 2008-09-20 02:40 pm (UTC)LMFAO!!! MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.
I love that Dean was searching for Sammy, and that he said that he knows everything about him. And, I love that Dean still calls Sammy a “kid.”
Don't they just own your little heart??
All I have left is that I love Genevieve Cortese, but I knew from watching Wildfire that she's not a great actress. But I'm kinda hoping that Ruby is really Lilith, because then the way she delivers her lines would make a lot more sense.

Date: 2008-09-20 10:44 pm (UTC)Don't they just own your little heart??
Oh, gosh, yeah, they do. I forget everything else when it comes to them.
I never watched Wildfire, so I've never seen her act before.
But I'm kinda hoping that Ruby is really Lilith
I hadn't even thought about that, but that would make so much sense.

Date: 2008-09-22 10:14 am (UTC)this whole episode was amazing, I loved how tightly Bobby hugged Dean too I thoyght that was just love
I didnt like Kristy either, I think Katoe did a better job
Im very very interested in the whole angel thing, because Kripke always said he wouldnt go there, and do that and yet he is so Im very interested to see how that works out

Date: 2008-09-22 10:31 am (UTC)This whole episode made me so happy, and I'm hoping the whole season goes like that.
Both of those hugs were just amazing. We need more scenes like that.
I was never a fan of Katie's, either, but even I think she did a better job than this girl.
I can't wait to hear more about that. I love that he's using an angel of the Lord *squee*, and I'm really wanting to see more of the character.
no subject
Date: 2008-09-22 10:24 pm (UTC)And I'm totally with you on not liking the boys not being honest with each other... that'll definitely be a problem sooner or later, and Sam's attitude it's really John like... doing everything on its own and not wanting to include Dean on what he does... I really hope the think things through soon.

Date: 2008-09-23 04:28 am (UTC)I can really see it becoming a problem, and I'm hoping Castiel can fix it.
