Elena didn't notice it right away. Things had been stressful lately, first with Katherine, then with Aunt Jenna, and the original vampires gunning for her. She was too burnt out to notice the little things, like how pale Jeremy had become, how he seemed to be tired all the time, and how he staggered a little when he walked, like he was trying too hard to keep his balance.

Stefan didn't notice what was happening at first. He had too many things on his plate, and Damon usually took on women, girls really, to be his “pets.” Jeremy was around now, a lot more than he had before Elena had decided to give him full disclosure, and so he should have noticed some of the signs. Now that things had calmed down with Katherine and Elijah had given him and Elena the chance to live their lives in an almost-normal way again, he could focus more keenly.

Jeremy was quieter than usual as they all ate dinner, Jenna and Alaric laughing at jokes that were shared only between them, Elena kept giving him soft smiles and holding onto his hand, and Damon was staring at the youngest member of the Gilbert clan. It took Stefan a couple of minutes to realize that his brother was watching Jeremy, sneering really, and that Jeremy was trying not to nod off. Alarm bells went off in his head, alarm bells that should have gone off a lot sooner than right now. Everything added up to trouble and Stefan casually checked for the ring, the vervain necklace. His ring was still in place, but he couldn't see the necklace. The hoodie that Jeremy wore hid most of his neck, and it took an even closer look for Stefan to see the bite marks.

Trying not to tip off Elena that something was wrong, Stefan listened to Jeremy's blood going through his veins, tried to pick up whether his heartbeats were regular. Jeremy seemed to notice the scrutiny and held his hoodie closer, shivering slightly. Elena looked at him, put one hand over his, and asked worriedly if he was okay. She jumped back a little, saying “God, you're ice cold!”

“It's just a little cold in here,” Jeremy slurred out, not even seeming to know that he was slurring his words or that he was repeating what Elena had already said. This got Jenna's attention and she and Alaric stopped talking. Damon was staring even harder at the boy now, this time with an angry glare instead of a sneer, and Stefan stood, blocking him from Jeremy.

Jeremy stood up slowly, looking like every move was in slow motion, and Stefan rose with him. Something was seriously wrong, and he was pretty sure that he knew what. The boy lost his footing for a moment and looked like he was going to fall if not helped. “Why is the room spinning?” It was a whisper, and Stefan hoped Jenna hadn't caught it. He hoped Elena didn't put too much thought into it.

“Why don't you let Alaric and me help you to bed, Jeremy, okay?” He asked gently, trying to convey without so many words that the other man needed to deal with this problem with him. Alaric jumped up from his seat, going to Jeremy's other side to help usher him upstairs.

“I can help you two, if you want,” Damon said, and only Stefan heard the taunting tone in his voice. He could probably take the kid right out from their grasps, but Stefan held on tighter and gritted back a negative response. “So touchy. You should really watch him around your brother, Elena. He might decide that Jeremy makes a better partner.”

Stefan heard Damon joking around with Elena and Jenna as he and Alaric helped Jeremy climb the stairs to his room. “You want to tell me what's going on now, Stefan?” Alaric demanded. He had gathered from the exchange between the two brothers that it had something to do with the other vampire, and was worried now.

“Help me get him into bed, and I'll show you.” Stefan didn't think he could bring himself to tell the teacher that his brother was feeding off of Elena's brother. He thought Damon was done with actually feeding off of people and was using blood banks as an alternative. Stefan sat the boy on the bed, and knelt down in front of him.

“You okay? Still feeling a bit dizzy?” Jeremy looked at him with dazed eyes and nodded, before realizing that was a bad idea. “Okay, here's what's going to happen. I'm going to help you get into your night clothes, but you have to help me. Don't nod.”

Jeremy leaned forward into him, allowing his sister's boyfriend to have total control over what he was doing. Stefan looked meaningfully at Alaric as he took off Jeremy's hoodie, and pointed at the bite marks. Alaric got down at Stefan's level, kneeling beside him, as he ran his hands over the marks. “Did Damon do that?” Stefan nodded slightly before continuing to take off the hoodie and remove Jeremy's shirt.

“Get that maroon shirt over there. Those are his pajamas, I think.” Stefan nodded with his head to the clothes for the other man to retrieve. He was being sincere when he told Elena he was getting Jeremy to bed. While he was re-dressing Jeremy, Alaric was pacing the room and helping where he could. Stefan held Jeremy with his elbow under his head and moved him back to pull him back to his pillows. He put Jeremy's limp body under the blankets and tucked him in.

“What are we going to do about this?” Alaric demanded, hands poised on his hips and looking at his student anxiously. “I'm assuming he's using Jeremy as his personal blood bank.”

“Yeah, pretty much,” Stefan affirmed as he looked through the room for that necklace. It had to be somewhere. Even if Jeremy had willingly taken the thing off, he wouldn't have destroyed it. He found it, under a few drawings on Jeremy's desk. “I'm going to start by putting this back on him...” he lifted Jeremy's head and slid the necklace around his neck, “And then I'm going to have a long talk with Damon about this.”

“Do you think that will be enough?”

“It has to be.” Stefan said resignedly. “If it's not, then there's nothing else I can really do to protect him.”
