For as long as he could remember, Nathan always wore three different faces. There was the one he wore when he was alone, the man who was unsure of himself and allowed himself a moment to breathe and reflect on the moral dilemmas of whatever he happened to be working towards at the time. This was the part of him that he never allowed anyone else, not even his own wife, to see. If he let them see that, then his secret would be out, and he would never be able to juggle the other two faces.
There was the one he wore for the public, the man who carried himself with confidence in every step and used a fake smile to get what he wanted. This was the part of him that dared to ask Linderman for more money than he was already going to get and expecting to get it, the part of him that waved and smiled at a crazy Indian man who he would eventually come to know as a colleague, and who acted kindly to Hiro Nakamura, not even realizing who his father was, from the moment he met him.
Then, there was the one he had always needed to use for Peter, which was the most complicated of all. They were born thirteen years apart, into two different stages of their parents lives, and both had very different experiences. By the time Peter came along, Nathan was in junior high. It had always been his job to look after Peter and make sure that he was safe and not getting himself into trouble. This was a role that Nathan had never allowed himself to change. He had to be the strong one, the one who knew what he wanted and where he was going in life. There could never be a moment of faltering decision for him, because he knew from the moment he watched as Peter mimicked his every move at the dinner table when he was two years old, that Peter was always going to follow his lead. If he showed fear, doubt, or hesitation, then Peter would be lost, too. So, the face that he wore for Peter was probably also the most important of all.
